Engagement rate is a helpful signal, not a guarantee of results for a brand partner. Saves and shares (not counted here, since they aren't publicly visible) increasingly matter more to Instagram's algorithm than likes and comments alone.

How engagement rate is calculated

This calculator uses the standard formula: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. It's the most common definition used by brands and influencer marketing platforms when screening creators, even though it excludes saves, shares, and story interactions.

Engagement rate benchmarks by follower tier

TierFollower rangeTypical engagement rate
Nano1,000 – 10,0005% – 8%
Micro10,000 – 100,0003% – 5%
Macro100,000 – 1,000,0002% – 3%
Mega1,000,000+1% – 2%

Engagement rate reliably falls as follower count grows. This is normal and expected, not a sign of a declining account. It's why brands increasingly compare creators within their tier rather than against mega-influencers.

Frequently asked questions

What's a "good" engagement rate?
Good means above the typical range for your follower tier, not a fixed universal number. A 6% engagement rate is excellent for a macro account but roughly average for a nano account.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I gain followers?
Instagram's reach doesn't scale linearly with follower count, and a growing audience is naturally less uniformly engaged than an early, highly loyal one. This is one of the most consistent patterns across the platform.
Does this include Reels views?
No. This calculator uses the classic likes+comments formula for feed posts. Reels engagement is typically measured differently (plays vs. interactions) because reach is driven by non-followers.
Why does niche change my sponsored post rate so much?
Brand budgets aren't evenly distributed across categories: finance, tech, and beauty accounts consistently attract higher-paying sponsors than general lifestyle or gaming content at the same follower count and engagement rate, because those advertisers have larger budgets per customer acquired.
